Sound Design - Dynamic Range and Metering

Image
The dynamic range of any recording is the ratio of the loudest peak to the lowest peak, expressed in decibels or dB.  The dynamic range comes into play with audio recordings as dynamic ranges that are too wide (bigger difference between bigger and smaller peaks) can be very dynamic but they don't have the "loudness" that is required for a normal listening experience. And recordings that have a narrow dynamic range can be overly compressed and make the recording very loud and eventually remove the energy from the original dynamics.   Audiometers are used to measure levels in some capacity or another. Each type of meter has different "ballistics", meaning just how fast the meter responds to the sound it's measuring.  Meters help us see the gain of the recording and the loudness of the tracks when we mix and also the dynamic ranges of the mixes when we master them.  When the meter runs over level, it's like a warning that says level it out, as most often t...

Critique Reflection - Avant Garde Film

The comments I’ve received on the film my team and I made were fairly positive. There were a lot of praises for the composition of the shots and the tone of the shots.  I think my team and I did a really good job with the exposure of the camera, as the shots don’t look weird or incomprehensible and create a nice effect for what we were trying to express.  My classmates really liked how many of the shots were composed with a lot of thought and depth behind them even if they look like simple and plain shots.  I feel like I personally need to improve on my editing and explore more shots that involve the camera moving much more fluidly.  I feel like classmates felt that the story itself could’ve been more abstract and the acting could’ve been more mature. I think our weakness are not exploring the cameras and other shot techniques enough and I certainly would try to include other shots that use a dolly that create a really neat effect instead of trying to get every...

Rear Window: Film Analysis and Audio Study

Image
In all of Rear Window,  one thing that I really liked is the minimal use of instrumental score and the emphasis given to natural noises. This (unknowing to the audience) creates a form of suspense as there is no beat drop or anything of that form for the viewers to wait for and the plot twist comes forward as a much more impactful surprise without the instrumental score, whereas with one, the audience can guess what the tone and mood of the scene is and what it is leading forward to.  I like this analysis video because it gives a very simple breakdown of the types of film techniques used and how they affected the film. I thought it was unique that the analysis was of the types of shots and cinematic techniques used instead of a literary analysis that explores the deeper meaning of the film and its plot.  What I analyzed throughout the film was that we only ever get Jeff's point of view of the entire story that takes place. We see what Jeff sees and never get the po...

Sound Effects in this scene include: An alarm clock Traffic (mostly cars and then later a truck) Background score People chattering Construction work Pigeons Kids playing Post-War Period of Films: The post-war period of films lasted from 1946 to 1959. This period actually began with a decline in film viewers as many were more interested in settling down and starting a family by either going back to college or finding a job, which meant that many had lost their interest in watching films.  Because television was also introduced during those years Hollywood had to make films that distinguished cinema from TV, which included-- stereophonic sound, large screen size, and color images produced with the help of widescreen technology and better color film stock.  The aftermath of the war also led to many filmmakers and audiences being interested in much darker and morally ambiguous subjects. Because of the socially critical films that were begin produced many actors, directors, and s...

Montage Film

Image
The success is the fact that we were able to quickly finish filming even though we had set backs and had to use a different camera and a broken tripod.  If I were to do the project again, I would probably choose a much more abstract idea and add in even more motifs instead of making it straightforward like this film is.
